Mavericks Hockey Club: Carlsbad Ice Realm's Home for Travel Hockey

Mavericks Hockey Club is the official home travel hockey program at Ice Realm Carlsbad. As a member club of both the Southern California Amateur Hockey Association (SCAHA) and the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) — operating under the umbrella of USA Hockey — the Mavericks compete against top travel clubs from across Southern California and beyond, giving local players a true competitive pathway from their home rink out onto the regional and national stage.

A Program Built for Ambitious Players

The Mavericks organization features a professional coaching staff dedicated to developing players at every stage of their hockey journey, with teams spanning 8U through 18U at the A/B and Tier AA levels. Whether a player is just beginning to explore travel hockey or is chasing a spot on a top-tier competitive roster, the Mavericks provide a structured environment for skill development, team play, and high-level competition.

This program is designed for motivated and ambitious players — those committed to training hard, pushing their limits, and working toward their full potential both on and off the ice. Mavericks athletes don't just practice; they travel to compete, testing their skills against some of the best clubs Southern California and the surrounding regions have to offer.

Two Seasons, One Pathway

The Mavericks structure their year around two main seasons, each designed to serve a different stage of a player's development:

Fall Full Season (August – March) The Fall Full Season is the heart of the Mavericks competitive calendar. The process begins with tryouts in June, where players are evaluated and placed onto rosters spanning 8U through 18U at the A/B and Tier AA levels. Once teams are set, the season runs from August through March — a full eight-month commitment that mirrors the structure of top travel programs across the country.

Throughout the season, Mavericks teams compete in sanctioned SCAHA and CAHA league play, facing off against other travel clubs from across Southern California and beyond. Regular league games are paired with team practices designed to build fundamental skills, systems play, and hockey IQ, while tournaments give players the chance to test themselves against higher levels of competition outside the regular league schedule. Along the way, players benefit from consistent reps with the same coaching staff and teammates, allowing real chemistry and long-term development to take root — the kind that comes from months of shared practices, road trips, and games that matter.

For many players, the Fall Full Season is also where recruiting exposure happens: consistent, high-level play in front of coaches, scouts, and other club programs over a full season carries far more weight than a handful of showcase games. It's the season where habits are built, standings are earned, and players put in the work that defines where they stand heading into the next tryout cycle.

Spring Development Season (Mid-March – End of June) A shorter, lower-commitment season for returning Mavericks players and aspiring travel players looking to sharpen their game or get a foot in the door before the next tryout cycle.
